The ITEC320 Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) unit for final-year Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) students has taken an innovative step by integrating ChatGPT into its curriculum. This cutting-edge AI tool bridges the gap between academic learning and professional readiness, providing students with flexible, personalised support for résumé writing, interview preparation, and job application logistics.
A Game-Changer for Career Preparation
Students leveraged ChatGPT to enhance their CVs with industry-relevant terminology, simulate interview scenarios, and research prospective employers. Many reported improved confidence and better outcomes, with one student describing the experience as a “game changer.” The tool’s 24/7 availability made it especially valuable for managing diverse schedules and unique preparation needs.
Fostering Critical Skills
The initiative went beyond just technical improvements. By teaching students to craft effective prompts and critically evaluate AI-generated outputs, it fostered essential skills like digital literacy, adaptive thinking, and self-directed learning—qualities vital for thriving in today’s fast-changing job market.
Driving Success with Innovation
While challenges such as initial prompt effectiveness and the risk of overreliance on AI arose, these were addressed through targeted training and reflective exercises. Early results demonstrate that ChatGPT not only enhances employability but also promotes equity in learning by supporting students from diverse backgrounds.
This initiative showcases the transformative potential of AI in education, paving the way for more inclusive, impactful, and future-ready learning experiences.
